My father served in the Pacific. He was wounded by shrapnel on the Island of Morotai, late in the war. 40% physical disability, 100% unacknowledged emotional disability. We didn't know and he would not speak of his service. As youth, my siblings and I knew nothing of his military service. In retrospect, I think he was damaged badly - far beyond his physical injury- that we never knew, not even his wife, our mother. He struggled, alcohol, 4 kids, blue collar pay. When he was on the boat heading for the Pacific he received a letter from Canisius College, in his hometown of Buffalo, offering him a full basketball ride. It never happened.
